A Clinical Study of Liver Abscess.

Abstract
A Statistical Study of Liver Abscess was done for 60 patients treatad surgically and medically from January, 1976 to December, 1980 at the Department University Hospital.
The Results were summarized as follow :
1) Of the 60 cases of liver abscess, 34 cases(56.7%) were amebic, 26 cases(43.3%) were pyogenic and mean Male to Female ratio was 4.5:1.
2) Liver abscess was most commonly involved in the 5th decade of life.
3) The most common Symptoms were fever and chillness (74. 3 %), RUQ pain(71.4%) and high incidence of jaundice in pyosenic abscess was characteristical.
4) The most common past history and associated disease was gall stone(9cases) in pyogenic liver abscess and intermittent diarhea(llcases) in amebic liver abscess.
5) Duration of Symptoms was most commonly involved within 1 week (17 cases, 28.3%) and duration of disease was most commonly involved from 1 month to 2 months. (18 case, 30%).
6) Severe leukocytosis vas noticed and elevated segmented neutrophils was also noticed.
7) Abnormal LFT findings were common and elevated alkaline phosphatase level was most common(34 cases. 56.7%).
8) The most frequent chest X-ray finding was Rt, hemidiaphragm elevation(40 %) .
9) Bacteriological Study of pus reveals positive in 41.7 % of cases and E. Col : (16.7 %) was most frequently found organism.
10) The Mortality rate was 8.3% and cause of death were sepsis Respiratory falure DIC and liver failuee.
11) The principle of treatment was open drainage via transcostal or transobdominal.
